Services

Jobs are priced by the hour at a rate of $50/hour plus parts. The minimum charge for a service call will be 1.5 hours ($75) which includes travel, prep, and the first 1.5 hours at the job.

In person estimates will be charged for a $50 trip charge if no work is performed. However, I can usually provide an approximate estimate over the phone, text or email with the caveat that if the job is more difficult than described the price may increase.

I do have set prices for certain tasks, see below for details.

Plumbing

Most minor repairs will fall under the service charge timeframe. For larger jobs a price will be quoted with the exception of the following:

Toilet installation: $200* (includes new wax ring and supply line)
Faucet installation: $150* (includes two new supply lines)
Garbage Disposal replacement: $125*
Dishwasher replacement: $175* (includes new supply line)
Angle stop installation $100 ea (includes 1 angle valve and 1 supply line)

*Owner provides/pays for fixtures. For an additional $50 fee I will pick up and deliver the fixture.

Water Heater Replacement

For the set price of $500 I will remove the old water heater and install the new water heater. All parts and modifications required to comply with current code will be provided.

Owner is responsible for:

Purchasing and providing the new water heater.
For an additional $75 fee I will pick up and deliver the new water heater.
Obtaining permit from the city
Arraigning for an inspection by the city
Disposal of old water heater

Light Electrical

Generally priced at the hourly rate. If the job is anticipated to take longer than 4 hours I can provide a quote. Some of the tasks in this category include:

Replace light fixture
Replace bathroom fan
Replace wall outlet
Replace breaker
TV Mounting
Ceiling fan installation

Note that I am not an electrician so I cannot install new electrical

Painting

Generally priced at the hourly rate. If the job is anticipated to take longer than 4 hours I can provide a quote.

I will usually accept interior or exterior jobs that can completed within one day, such as painting fascia, trim, doors, accent walls, or single rooms. Work can include caulking seams and patching small holes.

I do not paint entire houses.

General Handyman

Generally priced at the hourly rate. If the job is anticipated to take longer than 4 hours I can provide a quote. Some of the tasks in this category include:

Replacing light bulbs
Replacing batteries in smoke detectors
Hanging pictures
Furniture assembly
Install door knobs
Install smart locks
Mount cameras
Clean gutters (1st floor only)
Clean dryer vent

Pool Maintenance

Generally priced at the hourly rate. If the job is anticipated to take longer than 4 hours I can provide a quote. Some of the tasks in this category include:

Replace/rebuild pumps
Replace/rebuild valves
Repair equipment leaks
Repair aboveground piping leaks
Glass bead blast tile cleaning is priced at $7.99/lineal foot of tile.
Pool acid wash base rate is $499 which includes drain, acid, clean up and refill. Restart chemicals/salt are owners responsibility.

Absentee Homecare

First inspection of vacant home/vacation rental: $75
Each additional visit during the calandar year is $50/visit.
An inspection report will be emailed to the owner following the visit
Minor concerns will be noted on the inspection report
Urgent concerns can be addressed during the inspection visit after approval by owner (or if terms have been pre-approved)
Custom rates can be negotiated for HOAs, property managers and landlords.

Pet Sitting

Probably not a typical handyman service, but I love animals...we have three dogs and two cats.

Rate starts at $75/night for a single dog.
Overnight from 6 pm to 7 am.
Rates for additional animals or special needs can be negotiated.

Experience

My greatest strengths are in the plumbing realm. Over fifteen years working as a plumber has given me the skills to install, troubleshoot, repair or install anything plumbing related.

A partial list of plumbing services I offer include water heater troubleshooting, repair and replacement, faucet and shower valve troubleshooting, repair and installation, dishwasher replacement, garbage disposal diagnosis, repair and replacement, and toilet troubleshooting, repair and replacement and repair of domestic water and drain piping leaks.

I can clear minor drain clogs such as sink drains, shower drains and toilets if the clog is in/at the fixture. I do not have the equipment to clear main drains but can refer you to qualified companies.

I am a Certified Pool Operator and can troubleshoot and repair or replace pool equipment including pumps, chlorine generators, filters and controllers. I also offer tile cleaning and acid washing. Scheduled pool cleaning can be negotiated.

I also have significant experience diagnosing and replacing electrical components such as outlets, breakers and light fixtures. I am not an electrician and do not install new electrical but can refer you to qualified electricians.

As the only employee at The Affordable Handyman (lone wolf…) I can provide just about any handyman service that can be completed by a single person. For larger jobs I have many contacts in the Valley that I can refer you to.

I can usually respond to urgent requests the same day. However, I do not offer after hours service – but I can refer you to companies in the Valley that do offer emergency after hours service.

Service Area

I will accept calls from anywhere in the Coachella Valley including Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Thousand Palms, Indian Wells, Palm Desert, La Quinta, Indio, Coachella, Thermal and Sky Valley.

It is a bit out of my preferred range but I can sometimes be persuaded to take calls in Morongo Valley, Yucca Valley,Joshua Tree, and Twentynine Palms

About Me

Just as an octopus (my favorite animal) has many arms I have developed many skills over my fifty plus years career.

I began my career with the dream of becoming the next Jacques Cousteau and indeed for several years worked for a researcher in Hawaii studying fish and what they ate. I had a lot of fun, but after starting a family I realized that this was not enough to pay the bills so I began a new career as a plumber.

After four years of work and school I qualified as a licensed journeyman plumber in Massachusets and continued on for another seven years (including three years here in the Coachella Valley) where I gained valuable skills in new construction, remodeling, fixture installation, and plumbing diagnosis and repair.

I then pivoted into the world of public aquariums where I was able to combine my passion for marine life with the plumbing and construction skills I had developed. Over the next twenty plus years I kept my animals happy and healthy primarily by properly maintaining their environments. This work was very hands on and included not only plumbing but also electrical diagnosis, repair and installation, equipment diagnosis, repair and installation and occasional light carpentry and painting.

And for the last few years I have been working as a facilities engineer at a luxury resort in Rancho Mirage where I am tasked with keeping everything at peak operating condition.

Now I am at the point in my career where I would like to slow down a little and spend more time with my family, so I am here to assist you anyway I can – during normal working hours. Since I do not generally work after hours (except for house/pet sitting) and I am limited to tasks that can be completed by one person I am able to offer very low rates for extremely professional work.
